Patients who need a lumbar discectomy suffer from back and/or leg pain caused by pinched nerves in the lower back. This often results from a disc that has herniated, or ruptured, allowing the soft material inside to squeeze out, which then compresses the nerve. During endoscopic microdiscectomy, an endoscope and microsurgical techniques are used to remove the portion of the ruptured disc and/or bone spurs which may be pressing on the nerve in order to decompress, or relieve pressure on, the nerve. Compared to traditional open discectomies, endoscopic microdiscetomy requires only a very small incision and minimal disruption of the soft tissues of the back.
